Video Editing - Unit Plan Introduction
Composition and Editing Part II
Just like the goal of editing a paragraph, the focus in video composition is on presenting your ideas clearly and in a stimulating way. The videoclips on the technique for doing this in Macintosh iMovie and in Windows Movie Maker can be found below. The goal is to compose a two minute video to which an animated opening title and closing scrolling credits have been added.
Video Shooting Stage
The previous activity was to learn about effective video recording or video story telling; write a two minute script that introduces the unit plan, then shoot the script with a digital camcorder.
Video Editing Stage
When the shooting is completed, begin the steps of the Video Editing Stage below. There are two basic digital video options, either shooting with a camera that stores the video on a miniDV tape or shooting with a camera that stores the videoclips on an SD card or Flash chip. Make the appropriate choice below in learning how to move the digital video into the computer.
If using a Mac, follow the directions on the FlipCam Setup and Troubling Shooting page then use Apple's The FindOut How Movies. If using a different version of the iMovie editor, see the iMovie link in the Look Technical section of the chapter or your instructor.
If using a Windows computer follow the directions below.
If using a FlipCam or similar camcorders that save the files on Flash memory chips
If Using a miniDV tape to record the video
- Either bring a camcorder with a fully charged battery or plug the camcorder into an electrical socket. Hook the camcorder to the computer using the firewire cable. Turn on the camcorder. Insert the miniDV tape and close the camcorder's tape door. Either use the touchscreen or camera controls to rewind the tape.
- Start up the free video editing application called Windows Movie Maker. Tap the blue button at the top called Tasks, short for Movie Tasks, until a list of headings and tasks appears on the left side of the screen. Become familiar with its most useful basic features.
- Under the left sidebar list of Movie Tasks, show the list under the heading Capture Video. Select the command Capture from video device. Follow the steps to copy the video in the camcorder to an avi file in the My Video folder of the computer.
Once clips appear, play then to find spots that needed trimming (removal).
Editing the imported Videoclips
Save your sequencer window work (project file).
Watch and trim the clips. Move the needed clips to the sequencer window along the bottom edge.
- Watch these MovieMaker 2.0 tutorial videoclips. Under the heading D. Working with Projects, watch
- 1. Starting a new project (2:12) ;
- 2. Adding clips in storyboard view (1:21);
- 3. Inserting clips in storyboard view (0:31);
- 5. Deleting clips in the storyboard (0:50);
- 6. Resequencing clips in storyboard view ( 0:53);
- 7. Adjusting the size of your storyboard (0:43);
- 8. Previewing movies in storyboard view ( 1:39);
- 9. Surveying storyboard view features (1:25);
- 10. Surveying the timeline view, pt. 1 (1:38);
- Watch the MovieMaker 2.0 tutorial videoclips under this heading. E. Working with Clips.
- Consider transitions between clips in the sequencer window, but do NOT use them if their use cuts out the needed audio.
Transition effects work by overlapping videoclips. Talk at the end of one clip and the beginning of the next will overlap and cancel each other out.
Transitions may be fun but they are not critical.
- The movie title clip should have animated text including title and the author's name. The scrolling credits at the end should include the job and the person's name, which any many cases will be the same person: script writer; camera person; grip; lighting engineer; audio engineer; telepromptor person; video editor; web editor and more.
- When done editing, save the finished movie 3 different ways to the My Video folder: Video for broadband (150 kbps); Video for dialup (38 kbps). This creates two files that need to be copied to your Web Stuff folder and uploaded to your web site. Later they'll be linked to unitview.html. Finally, put the video composition back onto the tape with the Send to DV camera command.
